1% for the Planet
We hold ourselves accountable to our commitment to be a better company. Better isn’t just in our name; it's a reminder that every day we can improve on the status quo by offering cleaning products that are better for people and the planet.
1% for the Planet connects businesses that pledge to donate 1% of their annual revenue with nonprofit organizations working on critical environmental causes.
1% for the Planet member since 2013
1% for the Planet was founded to prevent greenwashing by certifying reputable and accountable giving to environmental causes. Their support has been invaluable in helping us further our mission to make people- and planet-friendly products that work and use our business as a force for good.
Supporting Environmental Causes
One of the first things we did when starting Meliora Cleaning Products in 2013 was to become a 1% for the Planet business member. We wanted to go beyond creating people- and planet-friendly cleaning products by supporting groups and organizations working on causes that are deeply aligned with our values.
We commit to donate at least 2% of our annual revenue to nonprofit organizations focused on environmental, local, and social causes. Our primary partner is Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE), a Montana-based organization that works to amplify women’s voices to eliminate toxic chemicals that harm our health and our communities. WVE envisions “a world where women lead to create a healthy environment without toxic chemicals in our workplaces, homes, and communities."
In addition to donating to WVE, we partner with them on initiatives like lobbying to pass ingredient disclosure laws, including the Cleaning Products Right to Know Act in California.
1% for the Planet Certification Process
The 1% for the Planet certification process requires business members to sign a membership agreement, commit to donating at least 1% of their annual revenue to approved nonprofit partners, and pay annual membership dues. Each fiscal year, 1% for the Planet reviews documentation to confirm total annual revenue, as well as documentation of donations to nonprofit partners. Businesses are required to provide adequate documentation and pass the review each year to retain membership status.
Once a business member has joined the network, they must find at least one approved environmental partner through the online directory or network map, or by working with 1% for the Planet staff. Business members support their nonprofit partners directly without the need for an intermediary and are encouraged to develop meaningful relationships with them.
About 1% for the Planet
1% for the Planet is “a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual business memberships and individual engagement opportunities.” It was created in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia and Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies based on the premise that businesses that profit from resources taken from the planet have a responsibility to protect the planet. Since then, 1% for the Planet has certified more than $435 million in support to approved environmental partners.
