Cleaning Product Ingredient Disclosure Map

Do ingredients have to be listed on cleaning products?

No Federal law requires companies to disclose the ingredients used in any cleaning product used in your home. Not on the packaging. Not on their website. They don't even need to tell you what's in their products when you call and ask.

But there is some good news! We are slowly starting to see changes happening at the state level. To help you keep up-to-date with the latest rules and regulations, we've added this Ingredient Disclosure Map to our website.

Ingredient Disclosure Map - United States Laws

As we learn about a local, state, or federal organization which introduces, advances, or signs into law any bill about ingredient disclosure, we'll add them to the map with a brief description below.

If you know of some information we've missed, please tell us! Share this information with your friends, family, organizations, and lawmakers that feel we all deserve to know what's in our homes.

1. Federal Ingredient Disclosure Laws

To date, there is still no Federal law requiring the disclosure of the ingredients used in home cleaning products. Nothing requires companies to list ingredients on their packaging or websites or to disclose ingredients to customers who ask in any way.

2. California “Cleaning Products Right to Know Act” - SB 258

Signed into law in 2017, California's "Cleaning Products Right to Know Act" requires the disclosure of ingredients used in home cleaning products (except fragrance and "Confidential Business Information"-related ingredients.

3. New York Environmental Conservation Law - Articles 35 & 37

Effective December 31, 2022, New York amended Environmental Conservation Law Articles 35 and 37 to limit 1,4-dioxane levels in household cleaning, personal care, and cosmetic products sold or offered for sale in the state. 1,4-dioxane is a carcinogenic byproduct present in many household cleaning and laundry products. Companies can file for exemptions for the next two years if their products exceed the threshold.

Ingredient transparency is a cornerstone of our business

The reason Kate founded Meliora Cleaning Products in 2013 was simple—she thought you deserved to know exactly what's in the products you bring into your home, and how they affect the people and planet around you. We promise to give you all the information we can, so you can choose for yourself what's in your home.

Here are our commitments to you:

  • We'll list every ingredient right on the front label of our products. When space allows, we'll list why we chose each ingredient on the back label.
  • Each product page on our website will have a detailed ingredient list. This includes a breakdown of what each ingredient does.
  • Our Ingredients page has additional information on every ingredient we use across our entire product line. This includes technical naming and chemical identification (CAS Number) details, country of origin, and a neat fact or two about the ingredient.
  • All ingredients we use are both MADE SAFE® certified to be free of harmful chemicals and Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free.
