Health First Roadmap Preliminary Review - Category 2: Chemicals Assessment

In June 2018, we committed to following the Health First Roadmap and are ready to share the preliminary results of our self-assessment.

The Health First Roadmap is published by Women’s Voices for the Earth and contains specific benchmarks for company performance in four categories:

  1. Chemicals Management
  2. Chemicals Assessment
  3. Disclosure/Transparency
  4. Industry Collaboration

We're sharing details about one Category each week. Check out the links above for more details on the other Categories. This week we'll discuss Chemicals Assessment.

Health FIrst Roadmap - Category 2: Chemicals Assessment

Category: Chemicals Assessment

Current State: HEALTH FIRST

Explanation for Current State:

We use a third party screening process called MADE SAFE®. This screening process is the strictest in the cleaning products industry. MADE SAFE®  screens for known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs.

From the MADE SAFE®  website,

"MADE SAFE® is America’s first nontoxic seal for products we use every day, from baby to personal care to household and beyond. We certify that products you use on your body, with your family, and in your home are made with safe ingredients not known or suspected to harm human health."

For a small and relatively new cleaning product brand, we believe that working with trusted third parties such as MADE SAFE®  is the best way to fulfill our promise to making safer products, without requiring the extensive research and investment of having an in-house staff of environmental scientists and toxicologists. Relying on a third party assessment means that we can ensure our ingredient lists are safer and focus on making products.

Next Steps:

This is currently our strongest category on the Health First Roadmap. As can be seen from our self-assessment on the other categories and this blog post series, we're very committed to making the safest possible products but have improvements to make in many areas. We're going to rely on the strength of our third party assessment to bring our performance in the other areas up to speed.
For example, we're considering a policy to certify each new product released as MADE SAFE®, so the great performance of our certified products turns into great performance of our company as a whole.
We'll be posting more details on updates to our policies and improvements on the Roadmap in the coming weeks.
